Our Favorite Wine and Pizza Pairings

Pizza is cheap, filling, and delicious. It can be eaten wherever, whenever. People have been eating cheese and wine for years, so of course pizza and wine would make an even better combination. Have the perfect Friday night dinner after checking out our favorite combinations.

1. Cheese and Pinot Grigio

You can’t go wrong with a classic like cheese pizza. The classic flavors of mozzarella, tomato sauce, and basil pair perfectly with the light, crisp, and refreshing flavors of Pinot Grigio.

Try it also with: GSM (Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre) or Montepulciano

2. Pepperoni and Syrah

The spicy and meaty flavors of pepperoni pizza pair perfectly with a full bodied wine like Syrah. Syrah’s signature flavor profile of black pepper and currant matches up neatly with pepperoni.

Try it also with: Cabernet Franc, Sangiovese, Shiraz, Chianti, Cabernet Sauvignon, or  Zinfandel.

3. White and Chablis

White pizza is a sophisticated version of the standard. Because of the low acidity in white pizza, it needs to be paired with a light wine. Chablis is a naturally light tasting white wine that comes from the Burgundy region of France.

Try it also with: Pinot Noir or Chardonnay

4. Meat Lovers and Cabernet Sauvignon

Did you now that Cabernet Sauvignon needs thirteen years of aging to reach its peak? A strong red wine like Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be paired with the salty, strong, and meaty flavors that comprise a Meat Lover’s Pizza.

Try it also with: Syrah or Pinotage

5. Olive and Grenache

Grenache is comprised of grapes of course, as well as berry fruit like raspberries and strawberries. This full- bodied red wine that is low in acidity pairs well with the salty flavors of olive pizza.

Try it also with: Pinot Grigio

6. Hawaiian and Reisling

The Germans have been pairing Riesling with all kinds of meats so, of course the ham in Hawaiian pizza would pair greatly with it. Its gentle notes of peach and pear work perfectly with the pineapples. Riesling’s acidity works as a palate cleanser. It’s also a sweet beverage so it takes the ham and pineapple experience to the next level.

 Try it also with: Zinfandel

7. BBQ Chicken and Malbec

I wonder what the person who discovered barbecue chicken pizza was thinking when they made it. Who would have thought it would become such a popular flavor. Barbecue Chicken Pizza is sweet and smoky so you need a fruity drink like Malbec to balance the flavors.

Try it also with: Pinot Noir or Chardonnay
